We wear garments containing elastane every day. You can find it in swimsuits, underwear, dresses, jeans, and T-shirts. This material has changed the way we think about comfort — clothes have become softer, more comfortable, unrestricted in movement, and better at keeping their shape.
Elastane is all about movement and freedom. That’s why at BlackSeaTribe, we use fabrics with added elastane in many of our designs — from swimwear to lingerie. This component gives the garments elasticity, durability, and comfort that you can feel right away.
When elastane appeared, fashion literally stepped into a new era. Before that, fabrics couldn’t be comfortable, stretchy, and durable at the same time. The invention of this synthetic fiber in the mid-20th century gave designers what they were missing — a material that stretches yet retains its shape. That’s when the true era of comfort in fashion began.
So, is elastane synthetic or not? Yes, it’s a synthetic fiber. It was created by chemists at DuPont in 1958, and since then, it has become indispensable in the textile industry. In different countries, it’s also known as spandex or Lycra, but all these names refer to the same material.
The main idea behind elastane’s creation was to give fabrics the ability to stretch without deforming. Thanks to this property, designers got new tools to create clothes that adapt to a person’s movements rather than restrict them. With the invention of elastane, what once seemed impossible became reality — swimsuits that fit the body perfectly, or lingerie that’s invisible under clothes yet provides support and comfort.
Elastane is a balance of strength, flexibility, and comfort. That’s why elastane fabric is the choice of designers who value quality and durability.
The main advantage of elastane is its ability to stretch 5–8 times its original length and then return to its initial state. That’s why garments containing elastane don’t sag after several wears and always keep their shape. This property is especially important for swimsuits and underwear, where precise fit is crucial.
Elastane makes fabrics more durable. It increases resistance to tearing, deformation, and frequent washing. Clothes with added elastane last longer — and for the BlackSeaTribe brand, that matters.
Although elastane is synthetic, it’s very lightweight. When blended with other fibers, it gives the fabric a pleasant touch and comfortable wear. Clothing with elastane doesn’t press, doesn’t restrict movement, and stays comfortable even in hot weather. That’s why elastic fabric has become a standard in modern fashion — it follows the body’s shape yet gives a feeling of freedom.
Elastane is rarely used on its own. It’s usually added in small amounts to other materials to make them more elastic. Just a few percent of this fiber can completely transform the properties of a fabric.
For example, combining nylon and elastane makes the fabric perfect for swimwear — quick-drying, shape-retaining, and pleasant to the touch.
If you add elastane to cotton, you get a soft yet more resilient material — just what’s used for everyday T-shirts and underwear.
In combination with polyester, elastane creates a smooth, wear-resistant fabric often chosen for urban or office clothing.

Sea water, sunlight, and detergents affect any fiber over time, so we choose materials that maintain their appearance better. Our fabrics have a light UV protection — not absolute, but sufficient to help the swimsuit retain its color longer and remain pleasant to wear.
Good underwear is the kind you don’t notice at all. It doesn’t interfere, doesn’t shift, and doesn’t cause discomfort. Much of this is thanks to elastane — it allows the fabric to gently follow movement and stay comfortable throughout the day.

Each material has its role: microfiber adds smoothness, lace creates a barely noticeable texture, and cotton preserves softness. A small percentage of elastane (usually 2–5%) changes the behavior of the fabric: it becomes softer, fits better, doesn’t wrinkle, and is comfortable in motion. That’s why elastic fabric has become the foundation of modern comfort.

Clothes with elastane don’t require complicated care, but a few simple rules will help preserve their look and elasticity for a long time. The main things are gentle washing, proper drying, and careful storage.
Elastane doesn’t tolerate high temperatures. The optimal water temperature for washing is up to 30 °C. Use a delicate cycle without aggressive spinning. We recommend choosing detergents without bleach or enzymes, as these can weaken the fibers.
Before washing, it’s best to turn items inside out and, if possible, place them in a special bag for delicate fabrics. This reduces friction and helps preserve elasticity. When washing by hand, don’t twist the garments — just gently press out the water with your palms.
After washing, it’s important to dry the items properly. Elastane doesn’t tolerate hot air, so it’s best to avoid the dryer. Clothes with elastane should be dried naturally — on a flat surface or a clothesline, in the shade, away from direct sunlight and heaters.
We recommend drying BlackSeaTribe swimsuits horizontally to maintain the seam shape and fit. This helps the fibers return to their natural state and remain elastic.
Store clothes with elastane in a dry place, away from direct sunlight. Swimsuits and lingerie should be folded neatly in drawers or fabric pouches to avoid damaging delicate fibers. Do not keep such items in plastic bags — the fabric needs to “breathe.”
Following these simple rules will help your garments retain their original look much longer, even with frequent wear.
